Heading into the stills/audio project, I had a very vague and general idea of what I wanted the piece to look like. Since my decided theme was exploring the ways in which pop culture affects youth, I wanted my stills/audio project to focus on the way the media portrays the female body, and how this 'Barbie' image influences the way young women see and feel about themselves. The audio for this video is a compilation of several different songs. I open short with electrical sounds cut to photos of a girl's body. A TV appears, spliced with shots of the girl's eye viewing the media, and the thin models with beautiful, perfect bodies. The girl is shown in several different clothes, but she clearly does not feel comfortable in any of them. Insults such as "FATASS" and "LOSE WEIGHT" flash by the scene, as confusion, anxiety, and panic is illustrated by thrashing and restlessness. The music I chose plays an important part in the depiction, as it is violent and "out of control." The girl draws plastic surgery dashes across her stomach, and continues to cut more and more off of the stomach of a paper doll, symbolizing her wish to lose more and more weight. The TV and skull at the end of the video represent the destruction that can come of the pressure from the media to lose weight and obtain the "perfect" body.
